Trading volunteering hours for services of personal value such as dog walking, community gardening, massage, language tuition, painting - among many other possibilities - has now become easier. Timebanking.com.au was launched last weekend during an event held at the Hunter Wetlands and opened by The Minister of the Environment, Robyn Parker MP.
The Hunter Volunteer Centre was awarded funds to run the Timebanking trial in the Hunter region, covering 11 local government areas with a population of more than 615,000.
The program allows the voluntary exchange of services between members, operating on the basis of hour for hour. Everyone's time is of equal value and, if you give an hour of your time as a volunteer to your community, you can receive an hour's worth of Timebanking credit in return. These new relationships aim to increase social capital as well as community resilience to natural disasters, improve social inclusion and provide opportunities for all to participate.
"We're very excited to be part of this program and help grow community engagement on the grass roots level within our region", said Tony Ross, Executive Officer of the Hunter Volunteer Centre.
"We all know volunteers don't do what they do for the return, but this is a nice way to recognise their contribution to our communities and give something back", Tony said.
At the launch event, volunteers learned more about the project, had fun with friends and family, and at the same time, they accumulated timebanking hours planting trees.
"As well as gaining time credits, community givers can potentially build their skills, gain confidence, increase their social contact and receive a sense of satisfaction from giving to others", said Jodi Hughes, Timebanking Coordinator, Hunter Region.
"And for those that want to, any hours they earn can be donated to another person, an organisation of their choosing, or to the Timebanking Community Chest for use on community projects", Jodi said.
Everyone can be part of Timebanking as everyone has something to give.
